Searching for a Drug in PrescribeIT®
There are two ways a prescriber can send the associated Drug information as part of a PrescribeIT® transaction. The prescriber can use a Code Description or Text Description. Click below to learn more about each type of description.
Note: The Drug and Mixture Search heading will always retain the information provided by the prescriber. If Clear is selected, it will clear the search criteria but not the heading, the heading information will always be available for your reference.
A code description can either be the Drug Identification Number (DIN), Natural Production Number (NPN), or Canadian Clinic Drug Data (CCDD) Set. For more information about CCDD codes, see Canadian Clinic Drug Data (CCDD) Set below.
The PDF or e-prescription image will display as follows for a new or renewal transaction from the prescriber.
Perform the drug search by selecting the Expand button , it will provide a precise search of your local records.
Canadian Clinic Drug Data (CCDD) Set
CCDD codes have three different levels that allow you to search for a product in a general or specific way, depending on the information provided from the prescriber.
The following image provides a visual representation of the three types of CCDD codes. The Therapeutic Moiety is at the top because it is the most general, as you move to the bottom, your search becomes more specific. Click the CCDD code types below to learn more about each code.
Note: It is your responsibility to ensure the correct product is selected by using your professional judgement.
The Therapeutic Moiety of a product refers to the active ingredient components. This is similar to performing a generic name search. e.g. Metoprolol.
The Non Proprietary Therapeutic Product is a unique combination of the product's name, strength and form. e.g. Metoprolol, 50mg.
The Manufactured Product is a unique identifier such as the DIN or NPN of the product selected. e.g. Apo-Metoprolol 50mg.
A prescriber can provide a new or renewal transaction as a text description. A Drug and Mixture Search is performed with the information provided. You may need to adjust the search results in order find the appropriate local record. A prescriber may send a text description for compounds or mixtures.
